Sadik Kwaish Alfraji's Art Draws from Childhood Memories and Exile

Sadik Kwaish Alfraji, born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1960, creates art deeply rooted in his early life experiences, including poverty and his father's influence. He grew up in Baghdad's slums after his family moved there in 1963, where his father built their home on a government-allocated plot. Alfraji recalls childhood hardships, such as lacking a bicycle and kindergarten education, but his father, a security policeman at foreign embassies, supported his artistic interests by providing pastel crayons and discarded storybooks. A pivotal moment involved his father begging a school principal to enroll him, an act Alfraji remains grateful for. He studied at Baghdad's Institute of Fine Arts and Academy of Fine Arts in the 1970s and 80s, influenced by existentialism, Sufism, nihilism, and German Expressionist woodcuts. In 1996, seeking freedom from Saddam Hussein's dictatorship, he settled in Amersfoort, Netherlands, where he has lived for nearly 30 years. His work, primarily using black ink and charcoal, explores themes of exile, social exclusion, and time, with titles like Once I Was A Child (2000) and The House That My Father Built (2010). A 2009 letter from his nephew Ali inspired Ali's Boat (2014), featuring drawings and an animated video incorporating the board game Snakes and Ladders to symbolize fate and resilience. Alfraji views art as therapy and liberation, emphasizing emotional honesty to connect universally with viewers.
