Sade. Freedom or Evil: A Major Exhibition at CCCB Barcelona

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona) presents 'Sade. Freedom or Evil', an exhibition dedicated to the Marquis de Sade (1740–1814) and his impact on visual arts from Surrealism to the present. Curated by Alyce Mahon (University of Cambridge) and Antonio Monegal (comparative literature professor), the show follows Pier Paolo Pasolini's reading of Sade. It explores four core passions—transgressive, perverse, criminal, and political—as transmitted through Sade's writing. The exhibition includes works by Man Ray (Monument to D.A.F. de Sade, 1933), Jean Benoit (costume for Execution du Testament du Marquis de Sade, 1959), Shu Lea Cheang (SadeX), and references to Pasolini's film Salò (1975). It also addresses contemporary issues: violence, censorship, gender, and the dark web. The show runs until October 15, 2023.
