Sabine Lovatelli's Mozarteum Brasileiro Celebrates 35 Years with Classical Music Expansion

institutional · 2026-04-23

In 1981, Sabine Lovatelli, a cultural figure originally from Germany, established the Mozarteum Brasileiro in São Paulo alongside Claude Sanguszko. This organization has organized more than 1,000 concerts and has welcomed over 50 prestigious orchestras to Brazil, including the Cleveland Orchestra, directed by Lorin Maazel. Honored with Brazil's Ordem do Rio Branco in 1989, Lovatelli launched free public concerts and expanded her efforts to Bahia with the Festival Música em Trancoso in 2012. The festival's sixth edition is set to commence on April 18, showcasing the Orquestra Acadêmica Mozarteum Brasileiro and Russia's Coro Acadêmico Yurlov, along with Vocal Six. Lovatelli has voiced concerns about politicians overlooking classical music and advocates for local musician development through scholarships and international collaborations.
