festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The first edition of theGifer, a festival dedicated to GIF art, took place in Turin, Italy, with its only exhibition hosted at the NH Collection hotel on Piazza Carlina. The festival featured talks and GIF projections at various locations including Superbudda and Toolbox, culminating in an exhibition running until November 6, 2016. The show presented giphoscopes—analog GIF players created by OKKULT Motion Pictures—alongside screen-based GIFs categorized into #portrait, #photography, and #archive, using portraiture, photography, and art history images as animation bases. Brazilian media artist Sabato Visconti was announced as the winner during the award ceremony on November 5 at the Museo Nazionale del Cinema. His winning series explores the power of error in visual creation through glitch technique, drawing from electronic music composition. As a prize, Visconti will receive a solo exhibition at the next edition of theGifer, staged in Milan during miart. The exhibition space at NH Carlina regularly hosts shows by Camera—Centro Italiano per la Fotografia and features a contemporary art collection including a Carlo Mollino piece in the bar area.
