sā Ladakh Biennale 2026: World's Highest Biennale Unveils Regenerative Vision
The sā Ladakh Biennale, the world's highest biennale, returns for its inaugural edition from August 1–10, 2026, in Ladakh, India. Curated by Indian artist-architect Vishal K Dar, with associate curator Tsering Motup Siddho, the biennale is themed 'Signals from Another Star.' It features site-specific artworks, participatory installations, and community-led initiatives across the Leh–Kargil corridor, including villages such as Leh, Basgo, Likir, Nurla, Lamayuru, Henasku, Mulbekh, and Kargil. Local artists include Chemat Dorjey, Stanzin Samphel, Zahara Batool, Tundup Dorjay, Arunima Dazess Wangchuk, Jigmet Angmo, and Stanzin Tsepel. International participants include Agnieszka Kurant, Avantika Bawa, David Soin Tappeser, Himali Singh Soin (as Hylozoic/Desires), Grazia Toderi, and Jitish Kallat. Three special projects are planned: a participatory cultural space in Leh's Old Town, a collaboration with the Quiet Art Movement focusing on medicinal plants in Kargil led by Ayan Biswas, and a continuation of the 'raising flags' project with museum in progress, Austria, featuring a new work by Skarma Sonam Tashi. The biennale emphasizes regenerative practices, prioritizing adaptive reuse, local collaboration, and long-term community relationships over temporary mega-event extraction.
