S1 Artspace Sheffield transitions to artist-led institution with new venue and co-hosting role for New Contemporaries.
S1 Artspace, an artist-led organization in Sheffield, has relocated to a former pool hall. It collaborates on the yearly New Contemporaries exhibition, curated by Pablo Bronstein, Sarah Jones, and Michael Raedecker, showcasing half of the 40 selected artists, while the other half is displayed at Site Gallery. Established in 1995 with an initial funding of £3,000, S1 originally focused on providing studio spaces and exhibitions. Following the appointment of a curator in 2003, it expanded, featuring artists such as Karla Black and Haegue Yang. The new facility includes artist studios and a bookshop, and it was launched with 'Fifteen,' curated by Louise Hutchinson and George Henry Longly. S1 also fosters emerging talent through various programs, including an open-submission film-and-video salon.
