Ryan Mendoza's Exhibition at Galerie Lelong

Galerie Lelong in Paris presents Ryan Mendoza, a New York-born painter (b. 1971), from April 6 to May 19, 2007. Despite the gallery's usual focus on older artists, Mendoza has notable credentials: exhibited at White Cube Gallery in London and prefaced by Milan Kundera. Living between Berlin and Naples, he embraces painting with unabashed enthusiasm, using terms like 'emotion' and 'inspiration.' However, his work suffers from an excess of ideas and technical virtuosity, lacking density. His paintings, such as 'The Bride' (2007), depict intimate moments—a newborn, a wedding, a kiss—but their glossy, relief-like surfaces evoke anxiety. The bride in 'The Bride' lies on a floor, gazing at an uncertain future, embodying a contradiction between hope and unease. Mendoza's work, while technically brilliant, remains vulnerable and on the edge, capturing the impossibility of translating feeling into paint.
