Rwanda Healthcare System Readiness for Big Data Analytics in Diabetes Management

other · 2026-05-27

A recent study featured on arXiv (2605.26786) examines how prepared Rwanda's healthcare system is to integrate Big Data Analytics (BDA) and machine learning into diabetes care. This chronic metabolic condition can lead to severe health complications if not detected promptly. BDA can enhance the analysis of extensive health data, facilitating improved early diagnosis and treatment choices, although its application in clinical settings is still limited. With Rwanda's ongoing development of electronic medical records and health information systems, there is a significant opportunity for enhanced prediction, monitoring, and clinical decision-making. A workshop lasting five days involved 25 participants, including clinicians, data managers, and policymakers, to assess readiness and pinpoint challenges. The results underscore both the potential benefits and obstacles to implementation.

Key facts

  • Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease requiring early diagnosis and management.
  • Big Data Analytics and machine learning can analyze large health datasets for early detection and treatment.
  • Use of BDA in routine clinical practice is still limited.
  • Rwanda is expanding its electronic medical records and health information systems.
  • A five-day workshop involved 25 key stakeholders.
  • Stakeholders included clinicians, data managers, policymakers, medical researchers, nutritionists, and technology providers.
  • The workshop assessed preparedness and identified existing gaps.
  • Findings highlight both potential and main challenges for BDA adoption in diabetes management.
