Ruth Campau's Largest German Solo Show at Museum gegenstandsfreier Kunst

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Ruth Campau (b. 1955), a leading Danish non-objective painter, is the subject of her largest solo presentation in Germany at Museum gegenstandsfreier Kunst in Otterndorf. The exhibition features a walkable, site-specific installation on the ground floor with her characteristic vertical gestural brushstrokes on Mylar. Upstairs, her acrylic painting's multifaceted nature is displayed, including a powerful orange floor work, suspended color elements, and works on mirrors. Campau's practice treats painting as an open process engaging color, space, and architecture, with vertically guided traces of color that alter perception based on viewer position. Her works are held in public collections such as ARKEN–Museum of Contemporary Art, KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, and Malmö Art Museum. In 2020, she received a lifelong honorary grant from the Danish Arts Foundation, which also supports this exhibition. Campau lives and works in Copenhagen.
