Ruth Beraha's 'Tifone' Trophy for Monza Grand Prix

Italian artist Ruth Beraha (Milan, 1986) designed 'Tifone', the trophy for the 2023 Formula 1 Monza Grand Prix. Commissioned by title sponsor Pirelli with mediation from Hangar Bicocca, only four copies were produced: three for podium drivers and one for the winning team representative. The trophy resembles a bundle of silver snakes with open golden jaws, reinterpreting the exhaust manifold tubes of single-seater cars. Beraha, who lives and works in Bologna, is the third artist invited by Pirelli to bring contemporary Italian art to the racetrack, following Alice Ronchi (2021 Imola GP) and Patrick Tuttofuoco (2022 Monza GP). The work draws on mythology, specifically Typhon, a monstrous giant with a hundred snake heads symbolizing violent nature. Beraha sees the trophy as a metaphor for the complex, potentially lethal relationship between driver and car, as well as victory's ephemeral splendor. The production process combines high technology (3D cutting and modeling) with artisan craftsmanship in welding, polishing, assembly, and gilding. Beraha, who has exhibited in Italy and Europe and won the Premio Conai (2023), explores themes of human relationships and shifting power dynamics in society, including feminist perspectives.
