Russna Kaur's New Paintings at COOPER COLE, Toronto

In Toronto, COOPER COLE is showcasing 'It splits off, gently lifting under the pull', a solo exhibition featuring new paintings by Russna Kaur, her inaugural show with the gallery. The display includes large, multi-panel pieces that navigate between what is seen and what is hidden, challenging straightforward interpretation. Kaur's works evoke themes of memory and identity through their composition, scale, and mark-making, ultimately transitioning into abstraction. Initially vibrant colors convey playfulness but soon reveal tension and instability, with surfaces that peel and shift, hinting at untold stories. Kaur's artistic approach, rooted in her biology studies, emphasizes the significance of hidden systems and the passage of time. Born in 1991 in Brampton, Ontario, Kaur earned her BA from the University of Waterloo and an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Her works have been displayed at various venues, including Kamloops Art Gallery and Vancouver Art Gallery, and are part of numerous collections, such as the Audain Art Museum and the RBC Art Collection. Kaur currently resides and creates in Mississauga, Ontario.
