Russian Strikes Destroy Nearly 10 Million Books in Ukraine, 74% of 2026 Output

From May to August 2026, airstrikes by Russia resulted in the destruction or damage of no less than 9.65 million books in Ukraine, severely impacting the publishing sector. An analysis conducted by Chytomo on August 3 identified 15 specific assaults on bookstores and publishing facilities. These losses account for approximately 29% of Ukraine's 2025 print run of 33.21 million copies and about 74% of the 2026 output of 13.09 million books. Publishers such as Ranok, Knygolav, and BookChef faced significant losses. Noteworthy incidents included a strike on July 2 that obliterated 800,000 books and an August 2 drone attack in Kharkiv that destroyed 600,000 textbooks, resulting in $24 million in damages. In July, Russian forces fired 126 ballistic missiles at Ukraine, marking the highest monthly total for the year.
