Rushnaiwala Architects' Mixed-Use Gallery in Bilasya Blends Ceramics and Speaker Design

architecture-design · 2026-05-21

Rushnaiwala Architects completed Estudio ALT, a 743 m² mixed-use design gallery on a 50-hectare ecological estate in Bilasya, Kathwada, India, in 2025. The project, curated by Miwa Negoro, merges hand-painted ceramics with bespoke speaker design. The architecture uses exposed brick, concrete, and steel to explore material and spatial dualities, contrasting a robust exterior with a tectonic interior inspired by Henri Labrouste's Bibliothèque Nationale de France. The design balances nostalgia and innovation, drawing on brutalism and contemporary industrial aesthetics. The gallery accommodates public exhibitions and private creative practice, fostering a tactile dialogue between architectural form, wooden speakers, and vibrant ceramics. The team includes directors Muntaha Rushnaiwala and Filza Rushnaiwala, technical lead Asjad Shaikh, structural engineers Ami Engineers, civil engineers Rishikesh Engineers, fabricator Vinayak Industries, draftsman Simran Singh, and text writer J Sivatmika.
