Running with a Stroller Linked to Fewer Overuse Injuries in New Study
A recent study published on August 12 in PLOS One indicates that parents who jog with strollers are at a lower risk of overuse injuries compared to those who do not use strollers. Conducted by biomechanist Allison Altman-Singles from Penn State University, the research examined self-reported data from 196 parents using strollers and 53 without, all having children under four years old. The findings revealed that only 19% of stroller users reported injuries, in contrast to 30% of non-stroller runners, with the injury rate per 1,000 miles being 55% lower for stroller runners. The study suggests that the biomechanics of pushing a stroller may reduce impact on joints. Altman-Singles previously noted a 16% reduction in vertical impact force when using a stroller. Additionally, stroller runners logged 34% more miles when their child was between 6-12 months, promoting parental activity. However, the sample was predominantly female, and factors like breastfeeding were not considered. Cara Wall-Scheffler from Seattle Pacific University praised the study as a "great start," advocating for improved gender balance in future research. The article also highlights Stephen Biebelhausen, who unofficially set a new record for the fastest mile pushed in a stroller in Cleveland, completing it in 4:17.707, nearly ten seconds quicker than Silas Frantz's official record from 2025.
