Ruiting Xu, an architectural designer, created The Vessel Type to make water infrastructure more visible and to connect with both environmental cycles and community dynamics, particularly in areas experiencing severe seasonal changes. This innovative design merges wet and dry conditions into a seamless hydrological cycle. It captures runoff during rainy seasons to mitigate flooding and stores water for use in dry times, including agriculture. The structure comprises interconnected nodes that ensure accessibility during floods, featuring spaces for social engagement. Its adaptable framework responds to local geography and requirements, enabling each node to function independently while contributing to a broader network.
