Rui Inácio’s Dual Exhibition in Palermo: Paintings and Grass Sculpture

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Portuguese artist Rui Inácio (born 1971 in Loures) presents two concurrent projects in Palermo, curated by Giulia Ingarao. At Galleria Nuvole, the solo exhibition "Ó mar de Deus amansai" (I tamed God's sea) features graphic and pictorial works. Simultaneously, a temporary environmental sculpture made of grass blades, titled "As ondas do mar são brancas" (The waves of the sea are white), is installed at Santa Maria dello Spasimo. The works explore dual island cartographies: the landscape of Pico Island in the Azores archipelago and the geography of Sicily. Two volcanoes dominate these lands: Mount Pico, Portugal's highest mountain, and Mount Etna. Inácio appropriates specific views of nature, transforming them into images of lived memory, enlarging details through earthy painting and successive color drippings, creating a pantheistic elegy. The titles are borrowed from popular poetry.
