festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The Ruhr Triennale 2018, themed 'In-between time', runs from August 9 to September 23 across the Ruhr region in Germany. Founded in 2002 by Gerard Mortier, the festival presents 33 productions and projects, including 20 original works and 16 world premieres. Artistic director Stefanie Carp, in charge for 2018-2020, announced the program at PACT Zollverein in Essen alongside associate artist Christoph Marthaler. Venues include industrial sites in Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim, Hamm, and Bochum's Jahrhunderthalle. A new headquarters, 'Terzo Spazio', designed by raumlaborberlin, is an airplane structure on the Jahrhunderthalle square. The festival opens with William Kentridge's 'The Head and the Load' at Kraftzentrale Duisburg, examining Africa's role in World War I. Laurie Anderson returns for a music performance at Lichtburg Essen. Olu Oguibe creates a new sculpture as 'an appeal to the youth of all nations'.
