Rudolf Wakolbinger's 'Expansion of the Universe' Sound Installation Debuts in Florence

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Austrian artist Rudolf Wakolbinger's sound installation 'Expansion of the Universe' is presented for the first time in Italy at Le Murate. Progetti Arte contemporanea in Florence, from February 23, 2017, for one month. The work reworks thousands of NASA microwave scans of the universe into a 13.8-minute composition played through 216 speakers, corresponding to the 13.8 billion years from the Big Bang to the present. The installation debuted at Ars Electronica Festival 2016 in Linz. It is presented by Le Murate in collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum. The project draws inspiration from the Illustris simulation by MIT, completed in 2013, which visually recreated galaxy formation.
