Róza El-Hassan's 'Image Engine' Debuts at Budapest's Ludwig Museum Project Room

exhibition · 2026-04-19

On May 13, 1999, Róza El-Hassan unveiled her installation titled 'Image Engine' at the Ludwig Museum Budapest. This site-specific piece utilizes two projectors to showcase images sourced from a database, generated by inputting every word from Luchezar Boyadjiev's 'Small Talk' into search engines such as Lycos and AltaVista, resulting in thousands of out-of-context images. Accompanying excerpts from Boyadjiev's text critique the inconsistencies of electronic media and challenge the predominance of English on the internet. Initially intended to feature handmade albums, the first room was ultimately left vacant, displaying an anti-war leaflet in response to NATO's air strikes on Yugoslavia. El-Hassan has been internationally active since 1990, having studied at Städelschule in 1991 and exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1997.
