Royal Mail issues 12 Leonardo da Vinci stamps for 500th anniversary
For the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's death, Royal Mail has issued a set of 12 stamps featuring his drawings from the Royal Collection. The stamps coincide with the series of 12 exhibitions 'Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing' held across the UK in 2019. Philip Parker of Royal Mail stated that Leonardo's drawings continue to inspire. The selected works include 'Cranio sezionato' at Ulster Museum, Belfast; 'Studi di gatti' at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery; 'Testa di Leda' at Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; 'Testa di uomo barbuto' at Derby Museum and Art Gallery; 'Testa di San Filippo' (a preparatory drawing for 'The Last Supper'); and the design for an equestrian monument commissioned by Ludovico Sforza but never realized because the bronze was used for cannons in 1494 and the clay model was destroyed by French troops.
