Royal Apartments of Caserta Palace Restored with €920K

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The 18th-century Royal Palace of Caserta, which was commissioned by Charles III of Bourbon and designed by Luigi Vanvitelli, has seen significant restoration efforts in its Throne, Mars, Astrea, and Silver rooms. This initiative, supported by the PON – Complementary Operational Program for action and cohesion 2014-2020, involved an investment exceeding €920,000. Restorers carried out their work at heights approaching twenty meters while keeping the rooms open to visitors. Initial assessments uncovered cracks and detachments, necessitating mechanical and chemical cleaning, along with consolidation and color balancing. Among the highlights were the restoration of a fresco by Gennaro Maldarelli in the Throne room and a large canvas in the Astrea room. Director Tiziana Maffei commended the dedication of the staff and emphasized the significance of public access.
