Royal Academy Plans Workforce Reduction Amid Financial Strain

institutional · 2026-04-20

The Royal Academy faces severe financial difficulties, with its governing council approving a proposal to eliminate up to 60 positions. Interim Secretary and Chief Executive Natasha Mitchell described the situation as a serious financial challenge, though no final decisions have been made. Visitor numbers have plummeted from a peak of 1.6 million in 2018 to just 622,000 last year, drastically impacting revenue. The institution, which operates without government funding, relies on ticket sales, donations, sponsorships, commercial activities, and membership fees. Its latest annual report forecasts a net loss of £7.1 million for the 2024-25 budget before implementing major measures. To lessen the impact, half of the proposed cuts would come from unfilled vacancies, potentially leaving 30 current employees at risk. The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain, representing some staff, has criticized the RA's management as reckless and called for discussions on alternatives. Union representatives warned that workers are prepared to take swift action to protect jobs if management refuses to engage.
