Roy Stryker's Punched Negatives on View at Whitechapel Gallery
Opening on May 16, 2018, London's Whitechapel Gallery showcases a collection of photographs captured from 1935 to 1944 by the Farm Security Administration (FSA). These images portray the lives of rural American workers during the Great Depression, commissioned by economist Roy Stryker. As the head of the FSA's information division, Stryker would discard negatives he considered inadequate, resulting in the 'Killed Negatives' series. Featured photographers include Paul Carter, Jack Delano, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, and others. Additionally, contemporary artists Etienne Chambaud, Bill McDowell, and Lisa Oppenheim contribute to a conversation bridging historical and modern perspectives. The exhibition will be open until August 26, 2018.
