Roxy in the Box's Pop Murals Reclaim Naples' Hidden Alleys

Naples-based artist Roxy in the Box has launched a new chapter of her Vascio Art project, painting murals of celebrities like Marina Abramović, Basquiat, Artemisia Gentileschi, Naomi Campbell, Monica Bellucci, Madonna, and Sophia Loren in Vico dei Maiorano. The works, part of the earlier Chatting project in the Quartieri Spagnoli, aim to reconnect the city's hidden 'piccolo e segreto' (small and secret) spaces with the broader community. Using a pop aesthetic with glittering colors and life-sized figures, the artist transforms celebrities into everyday Neapolitans—Naomi Campbell sweeps a vicolo, Monica Bellucci takes out trash, Madonna and Sophia Loren sell lollipops. The project critiques classism and indifference, drawing on writer Anna Maria Ortese's reflections on neglect of the 'piccole persone.' Roxy in the Box's work is presented as a non-institutional artistic intervention that fosters sharing and reciprocity, turning art into a device rather than a fetish. The murals coincide with Dolce & Gabbana's 30th-anniversary celebrations in Naples.
