Rovigo Exhibition Explores the Interplay Between Visual Arts and Music from Symbolism to Avant-Garde

A new exhibition in Rovigo, curated by Paolo Bolpagni, examines the deep connections between visual arts and music, focusing on the period from Symbolism to the Avant-Gardes. The show opens with Symbolist works by Max Klinger, Giovanni Segantini, and Domenico Baccarini, who were drawn to the immateriality of musical notes and romantic moonlight themes. It then highlights the impact of 19th-century giants Beethoven and Richard Wagner, with Wagner's Nibelung myths and Grail epic explored through depictions of Valkyries, Isolde, Parsifal, and the dragon Fafner. Italian opera provides a counterpoint, inspiring paintings, sculptures, posters, and stage designs. The exhibition progresses to early 20th-century developments: Futurists like Luigi Russolo with his Intonarumori noise machines and the Manifesto of Futurist Music, Cubism's preference for musical instruments like guitars, and the centrality of music in the work of Vasily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Kandinsky's designs for Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' ballet are featured, along with Klee's 'At Night' (1921). The show also covers Neoplasticism, Surrealism, and Dadaism, accompanied by a curated sound selection. The exhibition argues that despite historical canonization of separate artistic disciplines, visual arts and music have constantly dialogued, a relationship made explicit in this period.
