Rouen Museums Explore Art-Cinema Dialogues in Twin Exhibitions

Two exhibitions in Rouen, France, jointly explore the intersections between visual arts and cinema. The Musée des beaux-arts de Rouen presents 'Arts et cinéma, les liaisons heureuses' (until February 10, 2020), a historical retrospective covering surrealist films like Buñuel's 'Un chien andalou' (1929), Man Ray's 'Les Étoiles de mer' (1928), and the Hitchcock-Dalí collaboration in 'Spellbound' (1945). The museum also features two satellite shows: portraits of psychiatric patients by actor Alain Cuny, collected by curator Dominique Païni, and photographs by actress Anne Wiazemsky, who donated a sketchbook by Jean-Luc Godard. Meanwhile, the Frac Normandie Rouen in Sotteville-lès-Rouen presents 'Remake' (until January 5, 2020), a contemporary counterpart with video works that reinterpret classic films. Highlights include Rose Lowder's 'Bouquets 21 to 30' (2001-05), which echoes Impressionist paintings; Shana Moulton's 'The Galactic Pot-Healer' (2010), inspired by Philip K. Dick; Dennis Adams's 'Black Belmondo' (2008), reworking Godard's 'Breathless'; and parodies of James Bond and Brian De Palma's 'Passion' by Julien Prévieux and Brice Dellsperger. The museum exhibition will travel to the Fondation de l'Hermitage in Lausanne from June 26 to November 1, 2020.
