Rotterdam's Port Transforms into New Cultural Hub
Rotterdam's modernist urban morphology, with its empty spaces in the city center, is allowing artists and creatives to establish a new cultural hub in the port area. Five key centers have emerged: Huidenclub, a former tannery in Delfshaven hosting exhibitions, residencies, and events focused on organic materials, ecology, and social change; it was the main venue for the Design Biennale of Rotterdam in February 2025. Brutus, founded by artist Joep van Lieshout in the M4H district, occupies a former brewery and brothel, offering raw space for immersive installations, performances, and a sculpture garden open weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00. Katoenhuis, also in M4H, is a cultural center in a former cotton warehouse built in 1950, focusing on spatial design, immersive experiences, and technology, with studios and event spaces. The Fenix Museum of Migration, opening in May 2025 on the Katendrecht peninsula, is housed in the Fenix warehouse, the world's largest port warehouse complex built around 1923. Its centerpiece is the "Tornado," a 30-meter stainless steel spiral symbolizing migrant journeys, offering panoramic views via a 550-meter double-helix wooden staircase. Ferro Dome, a blue cylindrical former gas tank in M4H, hosts concerts, festivals, and exhibitions for up to 6,000 people and was the main venue for the 10th Architecture Biennale of Rotterdam.
