Rostarr's 'Evolving Landscapes' Mural at Potato Head Beach Club in Bali

American artist Romon Kimin Yang, known as Rostarr, has created a monumental mural titled 'Evolving Landscapes' on the entire façade of Potato Head Beach Club in Seminyak, Bali. The work, which will remain on view for a full year, was inspired by the artist's weeks of observing the island's coastline, temples, dancers, and daily rituals of sun and sea worship. Rostarr, born in South Korea in 1971 and raised in Washington, D.C., moved to New York City in 1989 to study graphic design and printmaking at the School of Visual Arts. His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, abstract calligraphy, large-scale murals, and experimental filmmaking. The mural incorporates two Barong spirits that greet visitors at the two entrances to the club, a detail not immediately noticeable. Rostarr describes the work as monumental, rhythmic, and glyphic, and notes that he never sketches his ideas first, preferring to build works in a free-form manner that reveals itself during the process. The piece reflects his thoughts on Balinese culture, dance, Hindu gods, sun worship, and good times. The artist cites Roy Ayers Ubiquity's 'Life Is Just A Moment, Pt. 2' as a song that captures the work's essence.
