Rosemarie Castoro's 'Forest of Threes' Reconstructed at Thaddaeus Ropac Pantin

exhibition · 2026-04-24

The group exhibition 'Dimensions of Reality: Female Minimal' at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Pantin features Rosemarie Castoro's installation 'Forest of Threes' (1977-78), reconstructed for the first time since its creation. The exhibition reopens in early June 2020 and runs until August 1, 2020. Castoro, born in Brooklyn in 1939, was a key figure in the 1960s-70s New York art scene. Her practice spans abstract painting, concrete poetry, conceptual indexing, urban performances, light installations, and environmental wood sculptures. She studied dance and choreography at Pratt Institute and participated in works by Yvonne Rainer. 'Forest of Threes' comprises carved wooden branches that rise and descend, creating a forest-like landscape of three-figure groups. The work explores space, movement, and the relationship between body, sculpture, and environment. Castoro described her approach as carving space and creating 'exoskeletal auras.' The installation is made from reclaimed wood, polished and reworked. Castoro's work has recently been the subject of retrospectives at MCBA Barcelona and MAMCO Geneva. Her work was long shown in Paris by Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre and is now represented in Europe by Thaddaeus Ropac.
