Rosely Nakagawa comments on Solon Ribeiro's video in Videobrasil's Acervo Comentado project
Curator Rosely Nakagawa Matuck analyzes the video "Myxomatosis" (2008) by Ceará-born artist Solon Ribeiro, originally shown at the 19th Festival de Arte Contemporânea Sesc_Videobrasil in São Paulo in 2015. In the work, film frames are projected inside a slaughterhouse, where exposed viscera, blood, and meat alter the space's dynamics, creating a clash of contexts. Nakagawa notes the projected images of cinema actresses introduce a critical tone, connecting to an industrialized film industry that grinds down people, characters, and ideas. The Acervo Comentado Videobrasil is a partnership between arte!brasileiros and Associação Cultural Videobrasil, publishing parts of its archive every 15 days. The institution was founded in 1991 by Solange Farkas to house a growing collection of works and publications amassed since the first edition of the festival in 1983. The association systematically activates this collection, which brings together works from the geopolitical South—Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East—especially video art classics, in-house productions, and a vast collection of art publications.
