Rosana Paulino Wins Inaugural MUNCH Award
The inaugural MUNCH Award, honoring artistic freedom of expression, has been awarded to Brazilian artist Rosana Paulino (b. 1967). The award, created by MUNCH museum in Oslo, carries a prize of NOK 300,000 (approx. £20,000) and will be presented annually. Paulino will be honored at a ceremony on 24 October 2024 at MUNCH. The international jury, comprising Wanda Nanibush, Yvette Mutumba, Cosmin Costinaș, Tone Hansen, and Tominga O’Donnell, selected Paulino for her courageous and integrity-driven career, her contributions to unpacking violent histories of gender and race, and her role as a leading voice of Black feminism and the Afro-Brazilian community. MUNCH director Tone Hansen noted that freedom of expression is under growing constraint worldwide, and the award pays tribute to the artist's critical voice. Paulino's oeuvre includes installations, drawings, artist's books, and videos. The award is given in the spirit of Edvard Munch, who championed artistic freedom.
