Rosa Genoni: Fashion as Art and Activism in Early 20th-Century Italy
Eugenia Paulicelli's publication, 'Rosa Genoni. La Moda è una cosa seria' (Deleyva Editore, 2015), delves into the life of Rosa Genoni (1867–1954), a Milanese dressmaker, educator, author, and advocate for women's rights. Genoni skillfully combined her craft with Italy's artistic traditions, presenting eight dresses at the 1906 Esposizione Internazionale di Milano, which drew inspiration from Renaissance art and earned her prestigious accolades. In June 1908, actress Lyda Borelli donned Genoni's 'Tanagra' dress at Teatro Olimpia. From 1905, Genoni was a trailblazer in teaching a History of Costume course at the Scuole professionali femminili della Società Umanitaria di Milano. She wrote 'Storia del Costume Femminile' (1918) and 'Per una moda italiana' (1909) and represented Italy at the 1915 International Congress of Women. Genoni's career ended in 1933 due to the rise of fascism.
