Rosa Elena Curruchich's Secret Paintings Gain International Recognition

exhibition · 2026-08-17

Rosa Elena Curruchich, a self-taught Kaqchikel artist hailing from San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala, captured Indigenous life through her small oil paintings, often creating them in secrecy due to the threat of patriarchal violence. She was born in 1958 and passed away in 2005 at the age of 47, having held two solo exhibitions in Guatemala City. Currently, her first museum show, "Xa jun ruk'oxomal qanima—A Shared Heartbeat," is being held at La Nueva Fábrica in Santa Ana, Guatemala, before moving to the Blaffer Art Museum in 2027. Additionally, a solo exhibit titled "Rosa Elena Curruchich: Chronicles of Comalapa" is set to open at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo in October 2026. Following her participation in the 2024 Venice Biennale, the value of her works has increased from $6,000 to $10,000.
