Rosa Barba's Cinematic Sculptures at Vassivière
Rosa Barba's exhibition at the Centre international d'art et du paysage on Vassivière Island runs until July 4, 2010, curated by Chiara Parisi and Andrea Viliani. The show transforms the postmodern building designed by Aldo Rossi into a cinematic apparatus, blurring fiction and reality. Key works include 'Is It a Two-dimensional Analogy or a metaphor?', featuring a projector in the lighthouse-like tower with celluloid film spilling down; 'The Long Road' (2010), a film of a desert test track evoking land art; 'The Empirical Effect' (2009), about Mount Vesuvius; and 'White Museum' (2010), where a 70mm projector's beam exits a window onto the artificial lake. Other works like 'The Indifferent Back of a View Rather Than Its Face' (2009) and 'Enigmatic Whistler' (2009) explore text and projection. Barba, born 1972 in Sicily and based in Berlin, has shown at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Dia Art Foundation, and Centre Pompidou. The exhibition reveals cinema's physical components, giving moving images a tangible body.
