Rootfull grows lighting, textiles, and furniture from living plant roots

London-based bio-design studio Rootfull, founded by artist and photographer Zena Holloway, grows lighting, textiles, sculpture, and material studies from plant roots. The process uses hand-carved beeswax templates to guide roots through growth, resulting in biomaterials with the delicacy of lace and firmness of crafted surfaces. Holloway transitioned from underwater photography to biomaterials in 2018, first exploring mycelium before turning to plant roots. Rootfull's Swell Light is a lamp made from a fossil-like lattice of roots that filters light. The studio's wall works incorporate natural dyes like gallnut and hessian yarn. A collaboration with Delyth Fetherston-Dilke called fullSPRING explores using plant roots to bind British wool into upholstery filling as an alternative to petrochemical foam. Fashion collaborations include a stitch-free dress with Phoebe English, experiments with ACIEN, and shoe soles with Purified designed to biodegrade. Rootfull's installation ROOTED: Material Ecologies was presented at Messums West in a 13th-century tithe barn and later at First Light Festival in Lowestoft in June 2025. The studio holds patent-pending methods for growing materials.
