Ronya Hirsma's 'Second Guessing Sentence' Explores Domestic Ambiguity at Liquida Photo Fest

Finnish photographer Ronya Hirsma presents her project 'Second Guessing Sentence' at Liquida Photo Fest in Turin from May 8 to 11, 2025. The series examines domestic spaces, everyday objects, and gestures to reveal hidden tensions and emotional contradictions. Hirsma, based in Helsinki, holds an MFA in Photography from Valand Academy in Gothenburg. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Photo Saint-Germain in Paris (2022), Röda Sten Konsthall and NEVVEN in Gothenburg (2024), Studio Tabac in Stockholm (2024), and B-galleria in Turku (2024). In 2025, she will participate in IPE 166 at Saatchi Gallery in London. Her works are in the permanent collection of the Hasselblad Center. Hirsma began photographing at age 14 and describes her practice as a way to both perceive and shape reality. She juxtaposes bodies and functional objects to explore the simultaneous presence of the familiar and the unsettling. The domestic context serves as an ideal site for investigating emotional experiences that are difficult to rationalize. Her compositions remain open to multiple interpretations, focusing on how meaning is constructed through actions and situations. Hirsma is drawn to the incompleteness of understanding relationships, memories, and emotions, which fuels her ongoing work.
