Roni Horn's 'Seizure of Hope' at Hauser & Wirth London
At Hauser & Wirth's Savile Row gallery, Roni Horn's solo exhibition titled 'Seizure of Hope' showcases 406 paper works alongside a prominent glass sculpture. This exhibition is open from 21 May to 1 August 2026. The phrase 'I am paralysed with hope,' taken from comedian Maria Bamford's act and initially used by Horn in her 2021 work LOG, is inscribed repeatedly with wax crayon on variously colored papers, at times clear and at others obscured. Horn regards this phrase as a 'poignant connection to our time' in terms of politics, the environment, and the pandemic. At the center, a transparent glass cube, Untitled ('what happens to the hole when the cheese is gone?') 2022, changes appearance with the sunlight. Horn, who graduated in 1978 and has a background in sculpture, has long examined themes of change, as seen in her 2009 Tate Modern exhibition and projects like Library of Water, which features glacial meltwater in glass columns. Growing up in the suburbs of New York, she also took motorcycle journeys to Iceland, including a stint living in a remote lighthouse. The exhibition's repetitive elements evoke mantras or incantations, prompting viewers to seek meaning in the obsessive repetition.
