Ron Mueck's Mass of 100 Giant Skulls at NGV Triennial
The NGV Triennial at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne has opened, featuring works from over 100 creatives across 32 countries until April 18, 2018. The highlight is Ron Mueck's 'Mass' (2016-17), his largest work to date, comprising 100 enormous human skulls piled in the gallery. Mueck, known for hyperrealist sculptures like 'Mask' (1997) and 'Mask II' (2002), spent years studying physiognomy to explore the skull's biological structure, which he considers beautiful and universal. The installation draws inspiration from the stacked skulls in the Paris catacombs and references tragic events in Cambodia, Rwanda, and Iraq, serving as a contemporary memento mori.
