Romeo è Giulietta: Giovanni Veronesi's gender-bending Shakespeare comedy hits theaters February 14
Giovanni Veronesi, director of the Manuale d'amore trilogy, returns with Romeo è Giulietta, a romantic comedy inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The film stars Sergio Castellitto as Federico Landi Porrini, a fading theater director seeking his ideal Romeo and Juliet, and Pilar Fogliati as Vittoria, a young actress and teacher rejected for the role of Juliet due to a past mistake. With the help of makeup artist Geppy Cucciari, Vittoria disguises herself as a boy named Otto Novembre and auditions for Romeo, winning the part. The film explores love, revenge, precarious work, identity, and professional crisis. Fogliati co-wrote the script. Released by Vision Distribution on February 14, 2024, the film is an homage to theater, its lights and shadows, with irony, cynicism, passion, and depth.
