Rome's WeGil Space Marks First Year with New Exhibitions and Expansion Plans

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

The WeGil cultural center in Rome's Trastevere district, housed in the former Casa della Gioventù Italiana del Littorio designed by architect Luigi Moretti (1933-1937), celebrated its first anniversary since reopening on December 8, 2017, after restoration by the Lazio Region. Managed by LAZIOcrea, the space has attracted over 45,000 active visitors and hosted hundreds of events, including festivals, exhibitions (Steve McCurry), concerts, book presentations, and school initiatives on legality and anti-mafia. President Nicola Zingaretti announced two upcoming calls for proposals worth €10 million to support cultural venues. New features include Friday and Saturday evening programming with music, theater, and shows selected via public notice, involving 12 organizations for 24 events. An executive recovery plan for the entire building, with an additional €2 million investment, will add three functions by spring 2020: the Gian Maria Volonté School of Cinematography, professional training facilities, and an Arsial enogastronomy school. The current exhibition "L'aria del tempo" by photographer Massimo Sestini, curated by Alessandra Mauro and organized by Contrasto, presents about 40 photographs capturing news, natural beauty, political events, and leisure from a unique aerial perspective. The show runs until March 10, 2019.
