Rome’s restoration projects go digital with new Cantieri Narranti platform

The Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma has launched Cantieri Narranti, an online platform that documents and narrates the city’s ongoing restoration projects. Developed two years ago but fully operational in 2025, the platform aims to make restoration work transparent and accessible to the public. It features a real-time map of nearly 50 active construction sites, including the Church of Santa Lucia del Gonfalone, the consolidation of ancient walls at Villa and Terme di via Carciano, the restoration of the Basilica dei Santi Nereo e Achilleo, and the Recinto Piranesiano in Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta. The initiative has intensified during the Jubilee year, funded by PNRR and Giubileo 2025 resources. Cantieri Narranti offers detailed project sheets, photos, videos, and the possibility to book guided tours, following the model of Palazzo San Felice. The platform also communicates restoration principles such as the 'minimum intervention' rule, as established by the Carta Italiana del Restauro (1972). The project transforms inaccessible spaces into shared experiences for visitors, students, experts, and the curious.
