Rome's Piazza Venezia Metro Station to Double as Archaeological Museum
Construction has begun on Rome's new Metro C station at Piazza Venezia, a project that will integrate an archaeological museum within the transit hub. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri described it as having "a unique value for understanding Rome's immense heritage," allowing visitors to see the ancient start of Via Flaminia, its continuation Via del Corso, ancient shops, and Hadrian's university. The station, costing €700 million compared to the typical €100-150 million per station, will feature eight underground levels reaching 45 meters deep, with archaeological excavations spanning 66,000 cubic meters. The museum atrium on the first basement level will be accessible directly from Palazzo Venezia, the Vittoriano, and the Imperial Fora via a glass elevator. Mobility assessor Eugenio Patané noted the extension of Line C from San Giovanni to Piazza Venezia is among the world's most challenging due to soil stratification and recent archaeological discoveries, and is being coordinated with Walter Tocci and the ministry for the Imperial Fora project. Originally planned for the 2000 Jubilee, the station is now expected to open by the mid-2030s, with an optimistic timeline of eight years from Mayor Gualtieri and a conservative estimate of ten years. The project also includes plans to extend the green metro line to the Farnesina and develop a future Line D.
