Rome's Ninfeo della Pioggia reopens after restoration with Baroque festival
After decades of closure, the Ninfeo della Pioggia (Rain Nymphaeum) in the Horti Farnesiani on Rome's Palatine Hill reopened to the public on October 26, 2023, following a major restoration project that began in 2020. The nymphaeum, built in the second half of the 16th century for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese and designed by architect Girolamo Rainaldi, is a semi-subterranean pleasure pavilion featuring the Fontana della Pioggia (Rain Fountain), whose sound mimics falling rain, frescoes attributed to Modanino, and ancient sculptures. The restoration, led by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, resolved long-standing water infiltration issues and consolidated the entire structure. To mark the reopening, the park presents 'Festa Barocca,' an art-based experience blending contemporary installation aesthetics with historical research, evoking Baroque court life through music, words, images, and sounds. Parco director Alfonsina Russo highlighted the recovery of original frescoes depicting a 17th-century orchestra. Additional events include an international conference on nymphaea (December 13–15, 2023) and the exhibition 'Splendori farnesiani' opening December 12, 2023, which reconstructs 17th-century festive, botanical, and zoological culture through artworks and multimedia.
