Rome's most multi-ethnic school launches inclusion project with architecture and design

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

The Carlo Pisacane Primary School in Torpignattara, Rome, has launched PLAN, a community project aimed at social inclusion through architecture and design. The project is promoted by the Istituto Comprensivo via Ferraironi and curated by Melting Pro, and won the 2016 MIBACT call 'Scuola, spazio aperto alla cultura'. The school, considered the most multi-ethnic in Rome, has a high percentage of children with foreign origins. PLAN will run from September to December 2017 in three phases: first, renovation of the courtyard and construction of a laboratory; second, architecture and design workshops by Farm Cultural Park of Favara, involving students in the SOU school of architecture for children; third, territorial storytelling workshops led by Melting Pro and Dieci Mondi, creating a 'memory archive' and four cultural itineraries with guided tours by the children. The project concludes on December 15, 2017, with an exhibition of site-specific projects and a Creativity Festival open to the public. Maura Romano, cultural project manager and founder of Melting Pro, emphasized that the project starts from children's creative energy and aims to regenerate both infrastructure and social relations.
