Rome's Largest Eco-Mural Absorbs Smog in Ostiense
A 1,000-square-meter eco-mural titled 'Hunting Pollution' has been inaugurated on a residential building in Rome's Ostiense district, near the Gazometro street art hub. Created by Milanese street artist Federico Massa (Iena Cruz), the mural depicts an endangered tricolored heron fighting for survival. It uses Airlite paint, a technology that breaks down nitrogen oxides, benzene, and formaldehyde under light, effectively purifying the air. Twelve square meters of the mural offset the daily pollution produced by one car, with the entire work having an environmental impact equivalent to 30 trees. The project was fully funded by Yourban2030, a nonprofit founded in Rome in 2018 by Veronica de Angelis (president), Maura Crudeli (project manager), and Giuseppe Molinari (strategy advisor), focusing on sustainability and urban regeneration aligned with the UN's 2030 Agenda. Yourban2030 previously supported the installation 'Anio Vetus 2' by Sbagliato at Villa Ada. The organization will co-produce a documentary 'Hunting Pollution' with Image Hunters. This project also marks a collaboration between Yourban2030 and Air is Art, a nonprofit led by Kristen Grove and Antonio Cianci (CEO of the company producing Airlite), which aims to bring beauty and clean air to cities through artistic use of the paint.
