Rome's Gnamc Library and Archive Closed Since July 2024, Reopening Uncertain

institutional · 2026-04-26

Since July 2024, the Biblioteca e Archivio at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (Gnamc) in Rome has been shut down, marking the longest closure since 1946. While the official reason cited is urgent plant and regulatory maintenance, no specific reopening date has been announced. Staff members have been reassigned, and after two decades, the library director has been relocated. Academic groups Cunsta and Mi Riconosci? have voiced concerns over the absence of alternative consultation, warning users that the closure could extend until December 2025 or 2026. Established in 1883, the library contains approximately 90,000 volumes and 1,500 periodicals, but its layout, created by Costantino Dardi, is said to be out of compliance. Director Renata Cristina Mazzantini has faced backlash for her lack of transparency.
