Rome's Expo 2030 Bid: Tor Vergata Regeneration and Calatrava's Vele

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Rome has submitted its candidacy dossier for Expo 2030 to the BIE in Paris, centered on the theme 'People and Territories: Regeneration, Inclusion and Innovation'. The 618-page dossier, presented by Giampiero Massolo, Manlio Di Stefano, and Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, outlines a plan to regenerate the Tor Vergata area, including completing Santiago Calatrava's unfinished 'Vele' structures from the 2009 World Aquatics Championships. Carlo Ratti serves as Creative Consultant for the strategic vision. Key architectural projects include the Teaser Pavilion at the Imperial Fora, the Ecosystem 0.0 Pavilion, the Pale Blue Dot Pavilion, the All together/Alt together Pavilion at the Vele, and the Roomscape Pavilion. The energy strategy aims for decarbonization via a 150,000 sqm solar park with 36 MWp capacity. Rome competes against Riyadh, Busan, and Odesa for the 2030 World Expo.
