Rome's Ex Mattatoio to Become New Home for Academy of Fine Arts
The Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma will establish its permanent base at the Ex Mattatoio in the Testaccio area of Rome, a structure constructed between 1888 and 1891 by Gioacchino Ersoch. This transition follows a 20-year concession sanctioned by the Capitoline Assembly on October 20. The site will evolve into a 'Città delle Arti,' with the Academy utilizing 40,000 square meters, which includes the former stables and the Panottico, designated for a research center. Renovation efforts, led by architect Luciano Cupelloni, commenced, with the initial phase projected to finish by June 2023 and the entire project expected to conclude by 2026. Both Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Academy President Giuseppe Carmine Soriero highlighted the project's cultural importance.
