Rome's Auditorium Parco della Musica to get expanded public square and green spaces

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

Rome's city council approved the technical and economic feasibility plan for expanding the 'sagrato' (forecourt) of the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Alvisi Kirimoto. The €3.5 million project will extend pedestrian spaces, add 800 sqm of new greenery with 30 new plantings, and install 4,260 sqm of permeable paving to reduce heat island effects and improve stormwater management. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri framed it as part of a broader urban regeneration of the Flaminio district, aiming to enhance the cultural and innovative role of the area. Fondazione Musica per Roma CEO Raffaele Ranucci called it a fundamental step that reinforces the Auditorium's international role. Architect Massimo Alvisi, co-founder of Alvisi Kirimoto, noted the project realizes the original vision of connecting the Auditorium to Villa Glori park via a linear park and improving the underpass at Corso Francia. Construction is expected to begin between December 2025 and January 2026, with completion by end of 2026. Alvisi Kirimoto is also working on the redevelopment of the Palazzo dei Congressi at EUR, designed by Adalberto Libera, with executive design delivered and tenders expected by year-end, aiming for completion in 2026. Additionally, the firm is designing a piazza in Montespaccato as part of the '15 MUNICIPI 15 PROGETTI' program, which Alvisi describes as a unique European-scale public space regeneration initiative.
