Rome plans 7km pedestrian ring around Imperial Fora
Rome is planning a seven-kilometer pedestrian ring around its archaeological heart, including the Imperial Fora, Colosseum, Circus Maximus, and Porta Capena. The project, still awaiting funding, would create a car-free loop with green spaces, benches, and informational signs, except for two central lanes reserved for public transport. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano are negotiating the economic and organizational details, likely to be formalized through an international competition. The initiative also includes renovating two infopoints: one at Via del Fagutale (expanded with an outdoor area) and Casina Vignola Boccapaduli, which by November 2024 will become a central hub linking the Appian Way and the Fora, with a budget of €300,000. Superintendent Carlo Parisi Presicce emphasized the project's importance ahead of the Metro C station opening at Fori Imperiali-Colosseo. The idea was developed with the Sovrintendenza by a team led by former deputy mayor Walter Tocci.
